This event, which is called Tara District Scout Fair, will run from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. This free family event will have a number of activities for children of all ages.

The Clayton County Scouts will be offering a number of activities including shooting slingshots, blow guns, and rockets. Most exciting, the Fire Department will be on hand giving tours of a fire truck. Richard Davies, the event coordinator and volunteer said, “This will be the best event of its kind in the county this year!”

Baker Field in Starr Park located at 803 Forest Parkway in Forest Park will host this free family event. District Commissioner Jerry Martin recently observed, “The Boy Scouts in Clayton Co are really stepping up to the plate by offering a family friendly event like this for free. Every family in Clayton County should make it a point to attend; it will be a great time.”

“It is important for the community to have places to interact together. I’m very proud of the numerous volunteers that spent many long hours working to make this event possible. Without them and the boys this couldn’t have been possible,” said Lee Harper, District Executive for the Tara District.

For almost 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America covers 13 metro-Atlanta Counties: Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, and Rockdale. Last year, the Atlanta Area Council served over 44,000 youth, and 10,000 adult volunteers, with over 900 youth 400 adults in Clayton County Scouting. The Atlanta Area Council Volunteer Service Center, located at 1800 Circle 75 Pkwy, Atlanta, Georgia, is the operations center for all of the Council’s activities throughout the year.

For more information about the Tara District Scout Fair, please contact Lee Harper at 404-790-6455 or at lharper@atlantabsa.org
---
Community News You Can Use
Follow us on Twitter: @gafrontpage
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.PoliticalPotluck.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

Frankie Lyle Chapter #2074, UDC, Hosts 2nd Annual Bar-B-Q

The Frankie Lyle Chapter #2074 of the UDC in Jonesboro, GA will host its 2nd annual Bar-B-Q on Saturday, May 16 from 5:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at the Old Historical Jail on King Street in Jonesboro. Cultural Shock Week was developed by Lakeisa Cantey, assistant director of Campus Life.

The week will begin with a presentation by Jabari Asim, Editor-in-Chief of NAACP Magazine "The Crisis" and author of "The N Word" at 7 p.m. on Mar. 26 in Student Activities Center Ballroom located on the Clayton State University. Asim will speak about his upcoming book, "What Obama Means…For Our Culture, For Our Politics, For Our Future.”

Next, “Safe Zone Space Training” will be held on Mar. 31, from 11 a.m. to1:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Ballroom C. Twenty-five seats for Clayton State faculty, staff and students are available. The Safe Space program is a national movement to increase the visible presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) student allies and places that are “safe” for LGBT students across college campuses and school environments. An ally is a member, often of the majority group, who works to end oppression by supporting and advocating for the oppressed population. Attending the Safe Space training is one way to serve as an ally and can provide you with a chance to learn about yourself and others and to create a campus climate that is accepting of all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or other differences.

Following “Safe Zone Space Training,” individuals are invited to come out and be inspired and empowered by a talented group of poets. “Brave New Voices All Stars” will take place Apr. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Café located on the Clayton State University Campus.

The Brave New Voices All Stars is a group of young, diverse, creative and intelligent slam poets from various areas within and beyond the borders of the United States. Between the ages of 18 and 25, each member has gathered attention in the national arena, from showcases on HBO's Def Poetry, to feature articles in Teen People and Newsweek. Brave New Voices All Stars brandishes both Hip Hop sensibility and immaculate writing.

Finally, to end the week long celebration of diversity, “CulturalFest” will take place on Apr. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in University Center Quad.

Individuals are invited to come out and taste different dishes from all over the world and learn about other cultures. The event will also feature a Capoeira performance, which is an Afro-Brazilian dance form that incorporates self-defense maneuvers, at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. In addition, students will be able to create a Birthday Chronicle that features the actual headlines from the day and year they were born.

“I hope students will understand the significance and importance behind this celebration. Hopefully, students will step out of their comfort zones and enjoy learning about and interacting with other cultures,” Cantey says. All of the events, except the Safe Zone Space Training are free and open to the public.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta
---
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
Fayette Front Page
Community News You Can Use
Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

Clayton State to Hold Naming Ceremony for Lucy C. Huie Hall

Clayton State University will officially name its Jonesboro facility in honor of long-time Jonesboro resident and former Clayton State University Foundation trustee Lucy C. Huie on Thursday, Mar. 26.

The naming ceremony for Lucy C. Huie Hall will take place at Huie Hall at 11 a.m. Formerly the Clayton State University Aviation Training Center, Huie Hall is located on land donated by Huie adjacent to the Clayton County Justice Center, at 9157 Tara Blvd. in Jonesboro. The facility is currently used by Clayton State’s Division of Continuing Education.

One of the local pioneers of the Civil Rights movement through her participation in Help Our Public Education (HOPE), an organization formed to counter the threat to close down the public school system rather than allow any black child to attend school with whites, Huie has a history of public service that dates back to the days of Brown v. Board of Education.

“It [HOPE] was needed much more in outside counties than in Atlanta. One of the jobs was to influence public opinion,” Huie recalls. Of course, some public opinion was harder to influence than others. Huie and her husband Arthur had three crosses burned on their lawn in the late 50s and early 60s.

Huie originally studied to become a librarian, and at one point in her schooling, left the south to attend college in Colorado.

“In Colorado the public restrooms were not segregated by color. They were not [segregated] at the University of Denver, so I had seen another way of life,” she points out.

A social worker later in life, Huie also conducted a number or oral history interviews in Clayton County. Now a widow in her eighties, she still exhibits the self confidence and openness to new ideas that made her a leader in the Clayton County HOPE movement.

“Her sense of responsibility to her community still guides her life,” says Clayton State Associate Professor of History Dr. Kathryn Kemp, who has interviewed Huie extensively. “Lucy and Arthur Huie and the other HOPE supporters may not be equivalent to the great martyrs and famous heroes of the civil rights movement, but the willingness of people like these to lead their communities a step forward was also essential to the progress of the greatest American social movement of the century.”

The public is invited to the naming ceremony for Huie Hall, however, an RSVP is required. Please RSVP to Linda Castleberry at (678) 466-4470 by Monday, Mar. 23.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
---
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
Fayette Front Page
Community News You Can Use
Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://claytonfrontpage.blogspot.com/2009/03/clayton-state-to-hold-naming-ceremony.html' title='Clayton State to Hold Naming Ceremony for Lucy C. Moulder, resident of Sharpsburg, Georgia, has published two books, A Cord of Three Strands and Eyes of the Calusa, which was recently recognized as a finalist for the President's Book Awards by the Florida Publishers Association, Inc. Both books are suitable for elementary and middle school students.

Meticulously researched and creatively written, Eyes of the Calusa provides a fresh perspective into the lives and events of the opening years of the 18th century. The story begins in 1720 on the Golden Coast of Southwest Florida where fierce Calusa Indians ruled their mighty empire. Pirates patrolled the area, looking for Indians to capture and sell in the slave auctions of Charles Town, S.C.

In the novel A Cord of Three Strands, Moulder takes children on exciting adventure during the year 1838 with a runaway slave girl and a Cherokee boy on their way to freedom. During their journey, the children encounter a young Abraham Lincoln.

These innovative works of historical fiction are written for middle grade readers and can be read for individual enjoyment or used for classroom instruction. Moulder has designed a classroom guide for both novels based on the new Georgia Performance Standards to make her novels very teacher friendly.

A Commencement and a Commencement at Clayton State

Clayton State University’s annual Fall Commencement on Thursday, Dec. 11 proved to be a commencement in more ways than one. Perhaps Dr. Tom Barnett, faculty marshal, the University’s senior faculty member, and first director of the University’s first graduate program, said it best…

“Today marks the commencement of Clayton State as a full service university.”

Barnett was speaking on several levels. To the 350 or so assembled graduates at the two commencement ceremonies. To Anna Cox, the Jonesboro High School Latin teacher who received Clayton State’s first master’s level degree. To anyone interested in graduate-level education. As Clayton State President Dr. Thomas K. Harden, who presided at the dual ceremonies, noted, “the 21st Century will be the century of graduate and professional education. We must meet the needs of a global-based economy.”

It was indeed, as Harden noted in his remarks to the graduates, a very special day for Clayton State University.

While a total of 600 graduates were recognized in the Commencement program, there was no doubt that Cox, who received the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) in her hooding ceremony at the first session, was first among the graduates in more ways than one. The University’s first master’s graduate, and the first individual to receive a degree on Dec. 11, Cox was assisted in the hooding ceremony by Dr. Gwen Jones-Harold, her thesis director, and Dr. Nasser Momayezi, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences. Also looking on were Dean of the School of Graduate Studies Dr. Thomas Eaves, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Sharon Hoffman, current MALS program director Dr. Wendy Burns-Ardolino, Clayton State Instructor of Speech Communications Larry Wiley (Cox’s father) and fellow Jonesboro High School teacher Andrew Cox (her husband).

Barnett, the original director of the MALS program, and Hoffman spoke to all the graduates on the significance of both the occasion and graduate-level education. Barnett noted that the University now has more than 70 graduate-level faculty, has received almost 500 applications for its four current graduate programs and has enrolled more than 150 graduate students. With two Masters of Arts in Teaching degrees (Math and English) enrolling students in 2009, a proposal in to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia for an M.S. in Dental Hygiene, and masters programs in Psychology and Archival Studies under development, Thursday was clearly just the start of something big at Clayton State. However, as is always the case with a major step for any organization, there has to be someone to take the first step.

“We acknowledge and celebrate her accomplishment,” said Barnett of Cox. “Congratulations, Anna. You are a pioneer. You will blaze the trail for those who will follow.”

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
---
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
Fayette Front Page
Community News You Can Use
Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

Joe Gransden Big Band Christmas Playing at Spivey Hall, December 13

Here's a recipe for Christmas cheer: Take jazz trumpeter and vocalist Joe Gransden, add a 16-piece big band, some special guests and timeless tunes, and swing into the holiday spirit at Spivey Hall... It is based on organization, ease of use, accurate information and links, and creativity along with other things,” notes Clayton State SNA President Lauren Hutchison (Stockbridge).

The Clayton State chapter was also recognized with the people’s choice award for their banner titled “Oh the magical things you can do with care.” It is now on display in the Clayton State School of Nursing’s headquarters, the Harry S. It’s not a subject that the average scholar might want to ponder, but for Clayton State University Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dr. Alexander Hall, it’s as simple as Ockham’s Razor.

During the course of the past year, Hall has had published a book, two articles/chapters, and a review on various subjects in medieval philosophy and various 13th and 14th Century philosophers. In addition, he has forthcoming two pieces on Thomas Aquinas, the 13th Century Italian Catholic philosopher and theologian. In fact, Hall’s book, Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus: Natural Theology in the High Middle Ages considers how Aquinas and Scotus, two medieval theologians/philosophers, believed we come to learn about God through a study of the world we live in, on the assumption that, since God created the world, the world should offer some information about the creator, almost in the way a painting reveals something of the artist.

Released worldwide on Apr. 5, 2007 by Continuum International Publishing Group, Hall’s book seeks a middle ground between the philosophy of Aquinas and Scotus in relation to what many scholars believe are opposing answers to the question, “What can we know of God?”

Hall’s forthcoming Aquinas pieces include a translation of the great philosopher’s commentary on the 32nd Psalm.

“There is an ongoing project to translate St. Thomas Aquinas’s commentaries on the book of Psalms,” explains Hall of his Translation: Thomas Aquinas. “Super Psalmo 32.” In The Aquinas Translation Project, edited by Stephen Laughlin.

Hall has also contributed the Aquinas entry to the first ever encyclopedia of medieval philosophy, Encyclopedia of Medieval Philosophy: Philosophy Between 500 and 1500, which has an editorial board composed of leading scholars in the field.

Hall has written an additional work on Scotus, as well as a chapter, John Buridan: Fourteenth-Century Nominalism and Aristotle’s Categories” which appears in Medieval Commentaries on Aristotle’s “Categories,” edited by Lloyd Newton.

“This piece discusses what Scotus believes is the nature of our knowledge of God,” says Hall of his article, “Confused Univocity?” which appears in Proceedings of the Society of Medieval Logic and Metaphysics 7. “I argue Scotus believes our knowledge of God must be somewhat inaccurate owing to the vast gulf between creator and creation. The title ‘confused univocity’ reflects this. Traditionally Scotus is viewed as offering univocal (or completely correct) concepts of God, yet Scotus himself terms these concepts ‘confused’. Playing on this, I argue against the traditional interpretation.”

Finally, Hall has reviewed Demonstration and Scientific Knowledge in William of Ockham: A Translation of Summa Logicae III-II for “Journal of the History of Philosophy.”

“(It’s) a book that translates Ockham’s treatise on logic, which would be better thought of in contemporary terms as a book about the philosophy of science, i.e., a work that discusses how we arrive at certain knowledge or scientific laws,” says Hall. “The translation is accompanied with a lengthy introduction that provides a history of philosophy of science in the middle ages.”

And Ockham’s Razor? It’s simple… the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
---
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
Fayette Front Page
Community News You Can Use
Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

Clayton State School of Graduate Studies Holding Open House November 11

The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies will be holding its next monthly informational Open House on Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in room 201 of the University’s Harry S.
